A Micro-level Garment Entrepreneur

Shanthi is group leader of one of the most enterprising groups: Magilampoo SHG with 8 members. She has mild disability and finds difficulty in walking. However, she has overcome the difficulties and has lead the group from inception in 2008 till date, creating opportunities for herself and group members and thereby income generation. She was given a loan of INR 10,000 by Sornammal Educational Trust (SET), which was helpful to expand her enterprise. Since inception, the group was arranged credit linkages for four times to a tune of INR 9 lakh. In addition, Varam provided two loans – First cycle of INR 5,000 each and a second cycle of INR 35,000 each. Shanthi Invested in buying nine sewing machines. She tried best and obtained orders for stitching school uniforms from the authorities of Thiruvalluvar District. On an average, she gets orders worth INR 25, 000 and completes the order within two weeks. She also gets stitching orders from an export company and provides continuous job opportunities to 8 members of her group. On an average, each worker earns INR 6000 per month and thus she makes payments of wages to a tune of INR 48,000 per month. Apart from this, she is able to earn INR 15,000 per month herself.

Shanthi was given ‘THE MICRO LEVEL ENTREPRENEUR AWARD’ on 15th August 2014 by Mrs. Latha Pandiarajan, Director of Varam Capital.,
